Climate - Ground Elder is a crop grown in Rabi season. It is cultivated in both irrigated and non-irrigated conditions. Cold and dry climate is required for its good yield. It can be damaged by frost. Excess of moisture leads to high incidence of pests and diseases. 15-27° Celsius temperature and 65-70 percent humidity are suitable for Ground Elder . Irrigation arrangements have to be made when annual rainfall is less than 75 cm.
Soil - Except sandy soil, Ground Elder can be cultivated successfully in all types of soils in which there are abundant organic matter. For high yield, loamy soil with proper drainage is considered the best.
Field Preparation - Before sowing, the soil should be made friable by plowing deeply 2-3 times. In irrigated areas, if there is not enough moisture in the soil, then ploughing should be done before preparing the land.
Manure and Fertilizers - To get a good crop from cumin, 10-15 tones of cow dung manure or compost is added a week before the final ploughing. At the time of final ploughing, 250 kg of super phosphate and 60 kg of muriate of potash are added. Later, 200 kg of 'ammonium sulphate' is added as top dressing.
Seed rate - 3.0-4.0 kg of seed per hectare is sufficient.
